“The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future – whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation,” she expressed. “I have decided that now is the right time. Born in 1940 to King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, Queen Margrethe, renowned for her diplomatic finesse and creative persona, has enjoyed widespread adoration from the Danish populace. Her passion for archaeology and active participation in excavations have been integral aspects of her public persona.
Assuming the position of heir in 1953 after a constitutional amendment permitting women to inherit the throne, she wed French diplomat Henri de Laborde de Monpezat in 1967. Henri served as her royal consort until his demise in 2018. The royal couple was blessed with two sons, Crown Prince Frederik, who is set to ascend to the throne as King Frederik X, and Prince Joachim. Frederik tied the knot with Australian Mary Elizabeth Donaldson in 2004.
