Unveiling Series Mania’s Political Drama ‘Our People’: Tragedy, Corruption, and a Glimpse into Slovakian Society’s Dark Reality

In a groundbreaking move, Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions in March will showcase Slovakia’s explosive political drama, “Our People,” shedding light on the chilling murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kušnírová. The miniseries, produced by Jakub Viktorín and Tomáš Hrubý for nutprodukcia, delves into the deeply rooted corruption, tax frauds, and alleged mafia connections that led to the couple’s tragic demise in 2018.

Miro Šifra, the writer behind this gripping narrative, emphasizes the authenticity of their approach, stating, “We not only have their family’s consent, but also tens of thousands of pages of case files.” These documents, providing a detailed look into the interplay between the state and the mafia, form the backbone of the series, offering a captivating glimpse into the courage of those who risked their lives to expose the truth.

Drawing inspiration from over 50,000 pages of case files and personal interviews, the creative team, led by director Tereza Nvotová, acknowledges the difficulty in finding Slovak broadcasting partners due to the ongoing threat to free speech in the country. Nvotová expresses hope in international exposure, stating, “Being spotlighted at an international event is crucial for the future of the project.”

The series, drawing parallels to Adam McKay’s oeuvre, especially “The Big Short” and “Vice,” injects humor into the weighty subject matter. Šifra and Nvotová reveal their connection to “Fargo,” recognizing a similar, bizarre darkness in Slovak society. In “Our People,” viewers will follow characters on both sides of the law, weaving a portrait of a country where the powerful have operated with impunity for too long.

The focus keyword, “Our People,” takes center stage in this narrative, reflecting the series’ exploration of a worldwide epidemic concerning the safety of journalists. Šifra, recently in the spotlight for another show, “We’re on It Comrades,” aims to showcase engaging stories from Central Europe, highlighting the universal impact of corruption and decay in democracies worldwide.

As the miniseries unfolds, it becomes evident that “Our People” is not just a portrayal of a tragic event but a mirror reflecting the global challenges faced by journalists, making them easy targets in a world where populist demagogues perpetuate conspiracy theories and manipulate identity politics. In a society where decay is palpable, the series captures the moment that breaks the camel’s back, emphasizing the urgency of telling this story while it matters the most.
