SAG Awards 2024: ‘Oppenheimer’ Reigns Supreme as Surprise Winners Steal the Spotlight

In a night filled with unexpected twists and emotional moments, the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards made history and celebrated surprise winners. The drama “Oppenheimer” dominated the awards, securing the prize for the best cast, along with individual accolades for Cillian Murphy’s outstanding lead performance and Robert Downey Jr.’s supporting role. The film, delving into the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb, is now a strong contender for the upcoming Academy Awards.

The cast of HBO’s “Succession” and FX’s “The Bear” also claimed their share of the spotlight. “Succession” was named the best ensemble in a drama series, while “The Bear,” offering a pressure-cooker perspective on restaurant life, earned the best comedy series ensemble prize.

In a surprising upset, Elizabeth Debicki, the star of “The Crown,” took home the award for leading actress in a drama series for her transformative portrayal of Princess Diana. Pedro Pascal, known for his role in “The Last of Us,” emerged as a surprise winner for his performance as a survivor in a zombie apocalypse. Both victories left the audience stunned, with Pascal expressing his disbelief, admitting, “I’m a little drunk.”

Jeremy Allen White, the brilliant and troubled chef in “The Bear,” secured the best actor in a comedy series award for the second consecutive year, while his co-star Ayo Edebiri won best leading actress in a comedy. The duo, recent Emmy and Golden Globe winners, continued their winning streak at the SAG Awards.

Notable wins also included Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, co-stars in “Beef,” who won the top acting awards for a TV movie or limited series. Lily Gladstone, the star of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” made history as the first indigenous actress to win the award for best actress.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph added to her impressive collection, winning the SAG Award for best supporting actress for her role in “The Holdovers.” Reflecting on the challenges of the profession, she encouraged fellow actors to “keep going.”

The awards show, traditionally aired on cable television, made its debut on Netflix, allowing winners and presenters to freely express themselves with four-letter words. The change came during a tumultuous time in Hollywood, marked by intense labor strife and economic disruption due to the streaming revolution.

Fran Drescher, who presided over the 118-day strike as SAG-AFTRA president, praised the union members for their solidarity, calling their efforts a “historic” pact. Barbra Streisand, receiving the life achievement honor, reminisced about her journey from a modest Brooklyn apartment to Hollywood stardom, emphasizing the importance of perseverance.
