In a significant leap for Italy’s space technology ambitions, the Fucino Space Centre in Abruzzo is gearing up to host the main control center for the European Union’s ambitious Iris2 satellite constellation. The announcement by Adolfo Urso, Italy’s Industry Minister, underscores the nation’s pivotal role in advancing the EU’s space capabilities and solidifying its position on the global space tech stage.

The Fucino Space Centre, already renowned for its extensive facilities and contributions to space exploration, is set to become a key player in managing the Iris2 project. This move comes on the heels of the centre’s pivotal role in overseeing the European satellite system, Galileo, and the COSMO-SkyMed Earth observation satellites.

The Iris2 constellation, slated for deployment by 2027, is a game-changer, comprising 170 satellites designed to revolutionize communication for European governments and provide broadband services to remote areas. Going head-to-head with Elon Musk’s Starlink and Jeff Bezos’s Kuiper, Iris2 positions the EU at the forefront of the global space race.

With a robust 50-million-euro investment fueling expansion efforts, the Fucino Space Centre’s new mission is not just about technological advancements; it’s a catalyst for economic growth. Approximately 200 jobs are expected to be generated, effectively doubling the current workforce at the centre. This expansion mirrors the EU’s commitment to fostering technological innovation within its member states and strengthening their collective space capabilities.

As the Fucino Space Centre embarks on this monumental task, Italy emerges as a trailblazer, leading the way in shaping the future of satellite internet connectivity across Europe and beyond. The nation’s prowess in space technology takes center stage, marking a triumph in the journey towards space exploration and innovation.
