El Paso Police Department Honors Women Pioneers on International Women’s Day

Empowering El Paso: Celebrating Women in Policing on International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day, we shine a spotlight on the remarkable journey of women in the El Paso Police Department (EPPD), whose dedication and courage have paved the way for future generations.

More than 80 years ago, two trailblazing women applied for positions as police clerks with the EPPD, breaking barriers and setting the stage for women to become officers. In 1942, a historic newspaper advertisement sought out a full-duty policewoman, marking a pivotal moment in EPPD’s history. Fast forward to 1974, the year the first five women graduated from the El Paso Police Academy, taking the oath to protect and serve.

Today, the EPPD boasts 171 women officers among its ranks of approximately 1100 police officers. Detective Judy Oviedo, with 17 years of dedicated service, shares her experience and hopes to inspire more women to commit their lives to public service.

“I think when anyone decides to go into law enforcement, they have the desire to make a difference in their community,” says Detective Oviedo. “It’s a calling driven by values of service, courage, and integrity.”

From patrolling roads to leading the Crimes Against Children Unit, Detective Oviedo emphasizes the unique perspectives and values that women bring to the force. She broke barriers herself, becoming the only certified bomb technician among women in the department.

“I think being a female police officer has presented a unique set of challenges,” says Oviedo. “My approach was to let people see I am effective as a female in my work; policing is not gender-specific.”

Highlighting diversity and talent, the EPPD welcomes individuals like professional boxer Stephanie Han, who recently joined the force. Her announcement on social media reflects the department’s commitment to embracing women from diverse backgrounds.

International Women’s Day is a global celebration recognizing women’s achievements without regard to divisions. As we honor the women of the El Paso Police Department, we celebrate their invaluable contributions to our community and the evolution of law enforcement.

Join us in applauding these women who have overcome challenges, shattered stereotypes, and continue to inspire future generations.
