Daniel Radcliffe Expresses Sadness Over J.K. Rowling’s Anti-Transgender Stance

Daniel Radcliffe, famous for portraying the beloved character Harry Potter, has expressed deep sadness over J.K. Rowling’s continued anti-transgender comments and her support for others with transphobic views.

In an interview with The Atlantic, the actor, who recently earned a Tony Award nomination, revealed that he hasn’t spoken to Rowling in years. Radcliffe starred as the titular hero in all eight Potter films, and while he acknowledges her role in shaping his career, he emphasizes that individuals should not be beholden to the beliefs of others for their entire lives.

“It makes me really sad, ultimately, because I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic,” Radcliffe said, reflecting on Rowling’s controversial comments about gender.

Responding to Rowling’s recent social media post, where she indicated she wouldn’t forgive Radcliffe and his Potter costars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint for their differing views, Radcliffe reiterated his support for the LGBTQ community. He stated, “I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people, and have no further comment than that.”

Radcliffe has been vocal about his stance since Rowling’s initial anti-transgender remarks in June 2020. In an essay for the Trevor Project, he affirmed that “transgender women are women” and emphasized the importance of speaking out against harmful rhetoric.

In his interview with The Atlantic, Radcliffe explained his decision to address Rowling’s comments, citing his long-standing involvement with the Trevor Project. “I wanted to try and help people that had been negatively affected by the comments,” he said. “And to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everybody associated with the Potter franchise.”

Radcliffe’s unwavering support for the LGBTQ community and his willingness to speak out against discrimination continue to resonate with fans around the world.
