19-Year-Old Son of Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Found Dead at UC Berkeley

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Marco Troper, the 19-year-old son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, was discovered unresponsive in his UC Berkeley dormitory on Feb. 13. The young college freshman, described by his grandmother as a “math genius” and a “loving” individual, met an untimely end that has left his family devastated.

Berkeley Fire Department, responding to the distress call around 4:23 p.m., attempted life-saving measures, but sadly, Marco Troper was pronounced dead shortly after. While there are no signs of foul play, the cause of death remains a mystery at this time.

Troper’s grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, expressed her belief to SFGATE that her grandson may have died from a drug overdose. She shared, “He ingested a drug, and we don’t know what was in it. … One thing we do know, it was a drug.” Describing Marco as “everything you could have wished for in a son and a grandson,” Esther lamented the heartbreaking nature of the situation.

In a poignant Facebook post, Esther, also the author of “How to Raise Successful People,” conveyed the family’s devastation. She described Marco as the “most kind, loving, smart, fun, and beautiful human being” who was just beginning his second semester at UC Berkeley, majoring in math.

“He had a strong community of friends from his dorm at Stern Hall and his fraternity Zeta Psi and was thriving academically. At home, he would tell us endless stories of his life and friends at Berkeley,” Esther wrote. “Marco’s life was cut too short. And we are all devastated, thinking about all the opportunities and life experiences that he will miss and we will miss together. Marco, we all love you and miss you more than you will ever know.”

In an interview with SFGATE, Esther emphasized the family’s desire to prevent such tragedies from affecting other families. “Tragedy is very hard to sustain,” she said. “It makes you want to hide in a closet and never come out, but I think the main thing is that we need to push forward to see what we can do to help other people so there won’t be any other kids who end up like Marco.”

As the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding Marco Troper’s untimely death, the family remains committed to raising awareness about the potential dangers of substance use, hoping to spare others from similar heartbreak.
