Newen Connect’s ‘Master Sapiens’ Explores the First Art School in 3D Discovery

In an exclusive revelation, French distribution company Newen Connect is set to captivate audiences with their latest non-fiction series, “Master Sapiens,” offering a remarkable 3D exploration of the renowned Lascaux Cave, considered by experts as the first art school in history.

The two-episode series, produced by Pernel Media with broadcasting rights held by C8 / Planète + in France, delves into the Lascaux Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site closed to the public since 1963. Director Nathalie Laville, a documentary filmmaker specializing in archaeology, initially thought the project was impossible until a groundbreaking discovery changed the game.

In an interview with Variety ahead of the London TV Screenings, Laville explained, “I realized there was now a state-of-the-art 3D clone of the cave. It comprised the complete cave, replicated digitally with millimetric precision, allowing us to explore not only the environment inside but also the tiny details of the engravings.”

The “Master Sapiens” team negotiated full access to the 3D data, providing audiences with a virtual tour inside restricted areas of the cave for the first time in six decades. Laville expressed excitement about the freedom granted by the 3D technology, allowing them to move within the cave as if they were birds, enhancing the investigative experience.

Beyond 3D exploration, “Master Sapiens” incorporates animation, archival material, reenactments, and testimonials from specialists to unfold the story of homo sapiens living 21,000 years ago. Laville emphasized the use of various narrative techniques to create an archaeological documentary that connects with the human side of the story, transcending the typical rigidity associated with the genre.

As both director and writer of “Master Sapiens,” Laville’s hands-on approach ensures a full understanding of the series’ format and objectives. She highlights the main goal: “For the viewers to understand these were incredible artists who have the same cognitive abilities we have today.”

The importance of this message resonates as Laville expresses her hopes for the series to reach a global audience, connecting with people both in France and internationally. With rights available worldwide, “Master Sapiens” aims to break through the limitations often faced by documentaries and find its place among diverse audiences.
