Christina Applegate Recalls ‘Crying Every Night’ During Breast Cancer Journey
Christina Applegate, known for her roles in “Married with Children” and “Dead to Me,” opened up about her breast cancer journey in a candid conversation with Dax Shepard on the latest episode of the Armchair Expert podcast.
Reflecting on her 2008 diagnosis and subsequent double mastectomy, the 52-year-old actress expressed regret for not being more open and honest about her experience at the time.
“I learned that lesson the hard way because in 2008, when I had breast cancer at 36 years old, I went out, and I was the good girl talking about ‘Oh, I love my new boobs’ that are all scarred and f—ed up. What was I thinking?” she revealed.
Applegate admitted to putting on a facade during interviews, pretending to be positive and upbeat when, in reality, she was struggling emotionally. “Everything I was saying was a freaking lie. It was me trying to convince myself of something, and I think that did no service to anyone,” she lamented.
Drawing from her own experience, Applegate shared advice she gave to a friend in the public eye who was facing a cancer diagnosis. She encouraged honesty and vulnerability, urging them to share their journey authentically.
“I said, ‘Take it down,'” Applegate recalled, referencing a social media post where her friend expressed confidence in beating cancer. “What you’re gonna do is you’re going to be honest every step of the way through your chemo, your radiation, all the stuff.”
Applegate emphasized the importance of acknowledging the difficult emotions that accompany a cancer diagnosis, highlighting the need for authenticity and support.
Since then, the actress has been more forthcoming about her medical journey, including her announcement of a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in August 2021.
